When we were young, we raced motorcycles on Sunday afternoons and my brother and I would spend every Saturday night working in our garage with Dad preparing for Sunday afternoon. On every single one of those nights we listened to the Saturday Night Opry – it was Dad’s favorite night of radio. And much of that music was Gospel music. So, between Church and the garage and WSM Clear Channel 650, that music is in my blood and I just can’t help feeling it way down deep.
Several years ago we were playing a gig at Jarfly Brewing and I mentioned the idea of doing a Gospel Hour on Sundays to Daniel (one of the owners). He loved the idea, and the Jarfly Gospel Hour was born. It has proven to be a wonderful blend of two differing segments of the community that both share a common love of Gospel music, but that might not normally mingle with each other.
We meet on the first Sunday of every month from 4:00 to 5:00 PM at the Jarfly. It’s a crowd-participation event where we encourage you to sing with us. In fact, as I say every month, “the more you sing the better we sound!” So if you’re in Somerset on the first Sunday of the month come join us and help us make a joyful noise!
Oh yeah… I started setting up a little camera when Covid happened and recording it so those that weren’t comfortable being there in person could still sing along (even though it was a little after-the-fact). There’s a bunch of videos posted on the Danged Good Music YouTube channel if you need a Gospel Music fix. And - yes - you can sing along with us from the comfort of your own home…
I guess I should also mention that the Gospel Hour Band has kinda become popular! We’ve played several festivals this season and have more coming up. We never intended to be an organized, performing band, but we’re pretty pleased to share some good news with our music!
