When we were young, we raced motorcycles on Sunday afternoons and my brother and I would spend every Saturday night working in our garage with Dad preparing for Sunday afternoon. On every single one of those nights we listened to the Saturday Night Opry – it was Dad’s favorite night of radio. And much of that music was Gospel music. So, between Church and the garage and WSM Clear Channel 650, that music is in my blood and I just can’t help feeling it way down deep.

Several years ago we were playing a gig at Jarfly Brewing and I mentioned the idea of doing a Gospel Hour on Sundays to Daniel (one of the owners). He loved the idea, and the Jarfly Gospel Hour was born. It has proven to be a wonderful blend of two differing segments of the community that both share a common love of Gospel music, but that might not normally mingle with each other. We started meeting at the Jarfly on the first Sunday of every month from 4:00 to 5:00 PM and made it a crowd-participation event where we encouraged everyone to sing along with us. It worked out marvelously and we faithfully continued until the Jarfly closed its doors this spring.

To everything there is a season… and the Jarly was a wonderful beginning for the Gospel Hour. Now we’ve migrated a few blocks away and meet at Birdies and Barrels from 4:00 to 5:00 (eastern time) on the first Sunday of each month and have stretched out and meet at Java Springs – in Russell Springs, Kentucky – from 3:00 to 4:00 (central time) on the third Sunday of each month! As always, it’s still a sing along, but, at the final Gospel Hour at Jarfly we invited everyone to also bring along their instruments and join in with us, and it was so much fun that now we also encourage anyone who wants to, to “bring what ya’ play” and join in with us instrumentally too!

In kind of a cool side note, the Jarfly Gospel Hour Band was honored to win an Appalachian Arts and Entertainment award in the Best Religious/Worship/Spiritual category at the 2024 Appy Awards Ceremony. We were honored to represent all the entrants in this category with the message we share!

With the closing of the Jarfly we’ve shortened our name to just the Gospel Hour Band. Even though the name (and the venues) may have evolved we continue to share the same good news and joyful noise that started as the Jarfly Gospel Hour. The names may change but the message is always the same!

If you’re ever in beautiful downtown Somerset, Kentucky on the first Sunday of the month, or in beautiful Russell Springs, Kentucky on the third Sunday of the month we’d love to have you join us!
